Catch-Up Reviews #6: Sleaford Mods, Chelsea Wolfe, Krallice…

Sleaford Mods – Key Markets

Sleaford Mods have had an interesting rise to popularity since the release of their 2014 album “Divide And Exit”, an album that hooked a lot of listeners in with Andrew Fearn’s simple, no-nonsense instrumentals and Jason Williamson’s equally vicious vocals and lyrics. The Mods are a duo of their time, seething at current politicians and the attitudes that cripples a steady life in the UK, and it’s pretty much impossible not to relate to the rants in some way. Setting the bar so high for themselves, the question of “how will they follow this up?” was a big one.  Continue reading

So Stressed – “THE UNLAWFUL TRADE OF GRECO-ROMAN ART” Review

So Stressed - The Unlawful Trade Of Greco-Roman ArtSo Stressed – The Unlawful Trade Of Greco-Roman Art
Genre: Noise Rock / Experimental

Label: Honor Press

I won’t regurgitate too much about what I mentioned in my review of their last album, but So Stressed are a chaotic and noisy three-piece from Sacramento, California. Needless to say, their debut “Attracted To Open Mouths” made it into my top picks of 2014 and is still something I regularly listen to thanks to its seamless changes from pure noise and aggression to some of the catchiest choruses I’ve heard in a long, long time. However, things have changed in So Stressed’s sound since then…  Continue reading

Top 30 Albums of 2014: 30-16

Here’s the first half of the top 30 albums of 2014! While this year didn’t impress me anywhere near as much as last year, there were still dozens of great releases, especially in the second-half of the year. I guess as well, since this year has been very quiet for the Rich Reviewz blog (for personal reasons – 2015 will be the return of regular posts), you can see all the albums I’d wish I could have spoken about. Continue reading

Yorkshire Riffer Live Review (Eiger Studios, Leeds. 26/4/14)

‘Kin Hell Fest is the brainchild of Paul from No Fucks Given, which is on next weekend, and caters mostly to fans of crust, grind, thrash, death and all other extreme types of metal with the likes of Napalm Death, Undersmile, Massacre, Jesus Cröst and more playing across the whole weekend. Yorkshire Riffer is a sort of little brother to this main event, acting as a warm-up gig (just like the Salvation gigs are to Damnation festival). Despite this being the smaller gig, that doesn’t mean the line-up was anything less than great with the likes of doomsters Eagle Twin, Palehorse and beer-loving grinders The Afternoon Gentlemen ripping the audience apart for the night.  Continue reading

So Stressed – “ATTRACTED TO OPEN MOUTHS” Review

So Stressed - Attracted To Open Mouths

So Stressed – Attracted To Open Mouths
Genre: Noise Rock / Emo / Experimental

Label: Unsigned

So Stressed are a three-piece band from Sacramento, California who pump out a brash yet melodic vein of noise rock with emo tendencies. Despite the noisy existence of Pg.99 or Jerome’s Dream, it sounds like this mixture shouldn’t work, but it really does: imagine if At The Drive-In had been influenced by White Suns, Lightning Bolt and Rolo Tomassi and you might get a vague idea.  Continue reading

Wavves – “AFRAID OF HEIGHTS” Review

Wavves - Afraid Of Heights

Wavves – Afraid Of Heights
Genre: Garage Rock/Noise Pop

Label: Mom + Pop Records

Nathan Williams, AKA Wavves, is musician who has faced his fair deal of controversy and criticism in his short but highly successful run so far. If you scour the internet, you’re bound to read or see the renowned performance at Primavera Sound ‘o9, but depending on the type of person you are, you’ll either see the humour in it or boil your blood. But one thing is for sure: Nathan Williams is a guy who writes fun music that melts the borders between pop, surf and garage rock – all with a noisy delivery. Continue reading

Teeph – “VIETNAMASTE” Quick Review

Teeph – Vietnamaste
Genre: Noise Rock/Math Rock/Sludge

Label: Unsigned

Teeph are a groove-filled noise rock trio that consists of originators Sesar Sanchez (guitar) and Alex Coffin (drums) as well as later member Matt Shilts (bass). “Vietnamaste” is their second album, following 2009’s self-titled, and takes a more light-hearted approach, although there are still some pretty intense moments to be had. If You’re Going To… Damnation Festival 2012

Being an extreme metal fan in the UK, one of the most notable disappointments about it is the lack of British festivals that provide line-ups of bands that push their genres to the extreme. Yeah, we have Bloodstock, but is it really extreme? There’s Supersonic too, but line-ups often require a certain taste (especially in noise, electronic or rock/metal). However, Damnation is a sort of balance between the two, never shying away from putting on extreme bands, bands that won’t sell out a stadium but will definitely have people talking about their performances for years. In a sense, Damnation Festival is the UK’s version of the USA’s Maryland Death Fest and France’s Hellfest, on a smaller scale. Continue reading
