Ithaca – “TRESPASSERS” EP Review

Ithaca – Trespassers
Genre: Chaotic Hardcore/Hardcore

Label: COF Records / Soaked In Torment Records

If you’re new to this London lot like I was, let me share some basics: Ithaca are a five-piece that are pissed, mixing hardcore with chaos and emotive influence. Imagine a mash of Throats and Botch, with a bits of Curl Up And Die and Loma Prieta, and you’re pretty close – so to fans of the genres that those bands are associated with, Ithaca will seem familiar but fresh. This is their second EP to date and is made up of four short, sharp tracks. Continue reading

Catch-Up Reviews #5: Squarepusher, Moodie Black, Faith No More…

Rich Reviewz is coming back. Here’s some releases I’ve been enjoying recently for you to wrap your ears around…

Squarepusher – Damogen Furies

Squarepusher is Tom Jenkinson, a man who has pushed the boundaries of electronic music as far as possible since its inception in 1995. The list of his work and its variety is impressive for any musician of any genre and with each release, the direction he takes is completely unpredictable which is exactly what’s happened with “Damogen Furies” once again.  Continue reading

Yorkshire Riffer Live Review (Eiger Studios, Leeds. 26/4/14)

‘Kin Hell Fest is the brainchild of Paul from No Fucks Given, which is on next weekend, and caters mostly to fans of crust, grind, thrash, death and all other extreme types of metal with the likes of Napalm Death, Undersmile, Massacre, Jesus Cröst and more playing across the whole weekend. Yorkshire Riffer is a sort of little brother to this main event, acting as a warm-up gig (just like the Salvation gigs are to Damnation festival). Despite this being the smaller gig, that doesn’t mean the line-up was anything less than great with the likes of doomsters Eagle Twin, Palehorse and beer-loving grinders The Afternoon Gentlemen ripping the audience apart for the night.  Continue reading

So Stressed – “ATTRACTED TO OPEN MOUTHS” Review

So Stressed - Attracted To Open Mouths

So Stressed – Attracted To Open Mouths
Genre: Noise Rock / Emo / Experimental

Label: Unsigned

So Stressed are a three-piece band from Sacramento, California who pump out a brash yet melodic vein of noise rock with emo tendencies. Despite the noisy existence of Pg.99 or Jerome’s Dream, it sounds like this mixture shouldn’t work, but it really does: imagine if At The Drive-In had been influenced by White Suns, Lightning Bolt and Rolo Tomassi and you might get a vague idea.  Continue reading

Top 30 Albums of 2013: 15-1

So here we are, the final fifteen, the very top of my favourite albums of the year. 2013 was a great year for music with albums like these gracing the airwaves and I wonder whether 2014 will be as good… there’s certainly a lot to contest with here. Have a merry Christmas!  Continue reading

Nine Inch Nails – “HESITATION MARKS” Review

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation MarksNine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks
Genre: Industrial rock

Label: Columbia Records

When Nine Inch Nails release a new album, it’s BIG news, and so again it feels like another one of those reviews where an introduction or brief history of Nine Inch Nails (and Trent Reznor) is pretty pointless considering the throne that Reznor has built for his experimental project since the late 80’s. But there is a little context that needs to be run over on the few years prior to this release…  Continue reading
