Rich Reviewz will be back in swing… in 2015.

First of all, if you’re (still) reading this, thank you for being patient during the silence over the past year in which I’ve only done a few reviews – probably not even enough to qualify as a ‘handful’. I’ve thought about this site a lot when listening to new albums or after going to gigs (I’ve been to a fair lot this year, even more than usual), but I can never seem to gather any energy or willpower enough to sit down and type my thoughts. It’s frustrating when you’re in that slump because all your time feels wasted and you only have yourself to blame… which I guess is true.

This isn’t a post for sympathy – at least not consciously – but understanding is something I greatly appreciate with anyone who knows me or follows this blog. I’ll never bring my personal business in this, I just wouldn’t feel comfortable about exposing myself on this sort of platform (an open blog or a personal music reviewing site), but when some people get in contact about me doing stuff for them, I can sense the impatience at times and the personal reasons for why I’ve gone quiet is stuff I don’t really want to use as an ‘excuse’. It’s much easier for me to just avoid emails and messages until I feel ready to talk, and even then, my reply might be minimal.

The main reason for this (and I feel stupid for opening up about it) is that I’m currently very depressed, and have been for the past year. I’ve always had bouts of depression since my mid-teens, but the last year has been a new level (or hole) for me. I’m not going to go into details, but a lot of the time it is extremely hard to motivate yourself to get through a day, let alone “the rest of your life”. Seeing any good in anything isn’t an option; seeing any worth in yourself or other people is something that does not exist. A lot of the time it’s easier to try to nullify hopes and life with sleep, alcohol, isolation, etc. That’s just how it is.

I’m still battling with that, but I’m tired of feeling tired, and lately I’ve been thinking of things I’d like to do with the blog, to make it a more hands-on thing for my love of music. That said, I can guarantee that there will be no reviews (bar one, for another site) up here before the end of the year. HOWEVER: there will be end of the year lists – some of which I’ve already started! So even though you might not have been in the loop with what I’ve been digging this year, you will find out! Granted, disappointments won’t be in there, but they don’t need the attention that some of the overlooked blinders of the year deserve, and I think there’s quite a few.

So yeah, Rich Reviewz will formally be back in action next year. In the meantime, I’ll be working on my plans for the site that I’m hoping will happen, because I think they’re pretty interesting ideas (can you hear my ego growing?). I’m sorry to anyone who has sent stuff for submission – even though I did sorta of warn about this – because I’ve simply not checked the email for months. If you have a release next year, I’m interested, please let me know!

In the meantime, look after yourselves and enjoy the chilly ending of 2014.

Rich Reviewz is taking a break (cont.)

Late last year I posted that I was taking a break. Despite posting that, I never felt like I was because I did end up doing a few reviews of albums and gigs: I felt bad not doing anything because – even though it’s not the thing that pushes me to do reviews – it was a bit sad seeing views twindle and I just felt lazy, especially in comparison to other reviewers I know, who put out daily reviews and posts.

The truth is is that things are personally even worse than when I first announced that break back in October 2013. I don’t want to talk too much about my personal life here, but I have to be honest and admit that I have zero enthusiasm or energy for this blog right now, which hurts to say because since starting this I have had some amazing opportunities given to me and built friendships that would never have existed if not for this. When things reach a point where it’s a struggle to feed yourself and find any motivation to get through the day, I guess that’s when you need to make decisions.

So this time, I’m taking a more permanent break, I won’t be posting anything at all until I feel like I can actually return with a steady flow of content. As said before, I want to do things properly and I have no idea how long it will take because it depends on a lot of things, but I will be back, that I can promise.

At this point, I really wouldn’t bother emailing me with any requests or submissions – until two days ago, I hadn’t checked my email for over three months because the thought of it would give me anxiety. I’m sorry, I just don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

However, if you’re looking for review blogs or channels to get your latest fixes underground and mainstream music, then check these out. I either highly recommend them or read/watch them myself:

Echoes And Dust

Echoes And Dust is a review site I joined about two months ago but have only done one review for (I was meant to do more, but like above, I just can’t bring myself to get round to those reviews). They have their finger on the pulses of both underground and mainstream music; mostly covering the rock, metal, punk and post-rock veins and are partial to some pop and electronic too. They have a great and ever-growing team of talented writers.

samlovesmusic

Sam tends to focus on the more indie, hip-hop, rock and pop side of things – reviewing stuff from St. Vincent and Chelsea Wolfe to Iggy Azelea to La Dispute and Converge. The guy is always more than happy to discuss things too (which I’ve done a fair bit on his blog) and provides a lot of content outside of reviews.

Dead End Hip Hop

The name is self-explanatory: hip-hop. The quintet (Modest Media is forgotten so many times) are a group of passionate and knowledgeable hip-hop heads who review, interview and discuss news/concerns on youtube. I couldn’t recommend these enough and just like what happened with The Needle Drop, there are myriads of channels trying to do what they do but never achieving the natural vibe that these guys have.

Myke C-Town (of Dead End Hip Hop)

Myke is a member of DEHH but it’s well known that his interests in music lie in stuff outside of hip-hop too; especially with metal. On his own channel, he reviews live shows (again, mostly metal-related) and album releases, as well as hosting Q&As, and has a great series on his record collection.

Undertone Online

As far as my understanding goes for the website is that it did start off as a zine/magazine but transferred fully into its current online medium some time ago. The site covers almost everything in the pop, rock, metal and hip-hop spectrums. One thing I really like about it is that it’s pretty open to everything: you’ll get a review of new releases from Bong and Thou and then get a live review of McBusted. There’s also some good discussion posts that are pretty daring.

The Needle Drop

I mean, if you’ve never heard of this guy then I don’t know what to say. The internet’s busiest music nerd covers almost everything (hip-hop, punk, pop, jazz, grindcore, doom metal, indie, ambient, folk, country, etc.)

The Sludgelord

A cool blog/website passionately dedicated to sludge and doom, but also covering some black/death metal and grind. They have a ton of reviews and interviews for you to look through. Also cool to talk to on Twitter.

Black Metal & Brews

Again, the name sort of gives it away. Ben mostly reviews black metal and beers/ales, but he also has his fingers in the pies of ambient/drone and noise music, and so by that he is someone who focuses on the truly underground of underground music.

My Record Store Day 2014.

I didn’t have one as I was too skint to buy anything. However, I did discover this. Enjoy.

Coffinworm – “IV.I.VIII” Review (and a small update).

Well, I guess now is a good time to say that I’ve joined the Echoes And Dust team! It’s a music site that I really dig, and I’ve been talking to a few people involved with it for a while and have grown to dig them even more. I’m really happy to finally join their ranks and even happier that my first review for them is Coffinworm‘s “IV.I.VIII”, which you can read here. Please give it a gander and give the album a listen… it’s been blasting in my ears constantly for weeks now.

As for Rich Reviewz news, I’m sorry for being slow and posting unsteadily. I’ve got a load of half-done reviews and a list of more to do. I don’t want to bring my personal life onto here, but the past seven months has been a massive low point and recently I’ve only admitted that maybe I’m not coping with events as well as I thought I was, and so I’m working on fixing that. Life has not been kind to say the least.

Even though some reviews are VERY late (I will be doing Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Have A Nice Life releases still), they will happen, I promise. I haven’t lost any enthusiasm for this site or the music, it’s just hard to find the energy and time. I promise to pick things up in the future although I can’t say when.

But to end on a high note: there might be some more really cool prospects in the future. Super excited about them!

Rich Reviewz is taking a break…

I didn’t really want to ‘announce’ anything but since I’m getting requests for reviews, it’s only fair to let anyone who has recently submitted music for review or any requests know that I am giving this a break. Emphasise on break, because I’m not stopping this permanently, no way. Starting this blog, I was hoping to do some decent stuff and I was honestly surprised that I managed to have the opportunity to write for two other websites before the blog reached a six-month anniversary. I started taking a break from those sites too (again, I will be writing for them again) a while back and I have to put this personal review blog on hold as well.

It bums me out to do this, because I’m missing out on reviewing a lot of stuff I’d been highly anticipating (Danny Brown’s “Old”, Chelsea Wolfe’s “Pain Is Beauty”, Tim Hecker’s “Virgins” to name a few) and stuff I’ve really been digging (Deafheaven’s “Sunbather”, Ulcerate’s “Vermis”, Machinedrum’s “Vapor City” etc).

So why am I on a break? 2013 hasn’t been the best year – in fact, it’s been the worst for personal reasons. I have a lot of things to deal with and I just can’t spare the time and effort for this site. I’d only be forcing out rushed and unfair reviews of releases, and that’s not what Rich Reviewz is about. I want to do things properly. When I feel that everything is back to normal and I can pump out reviews comfortably like before, then I’ll be doing so and making up for everything I missed out.

I had also been hoping on starting interviews with bands a few months back, but it didn’t happen due to unforeseen problems on my part. I’m determined to get some interviews up on this site in the future.

That said, I have no idea when exactly the break will end. It could be within the next month, before the end of the year or into next year. I have no idea. I can promise end-of-the-year lists though. There will DEFINITELY be an Album Of The Year, EPs Of The Year and Songs Of The Year lists – I may even add splits. So far with new releases, I’ve listened to at least 67 albums, 10 EPs and 6 splits and we’ve still got a fair bit of time before people start posting their end-of-the-year lists. It’s going to be interesting after such a great year for music!

So if you want your music reviewed, I’m sorry to say that at this point in time, I can’t promise you anything. However, if you’re determined to have it put under the unforgiving inspection of this blog, then please keep with me and let me know when I start posting again. Hopefully it won’t be too long.

If you want to make sure you’re in the know of what’s happening with Rich Reviewz, then head over and join the Facebook page – I’ll post future updates on there.

Thank you for your patience.

A quick update…

So, that giveaway competition I held is now OVER. FINITE. NO MORE. The winner was Craig Rees, and so he’ll get his prizes soon. Thanks to everyone who took part and spread the word of Rich Reviewz!

Also, I now have a facebook page set up, so if it’s easier and more convenient, you can follow the reviews on there, as well as keeping up-to-date on news in the music world. Check it out here!

My review of Ghostface Killah’s “12 Reasons To Die” will be up tomorrow. This blog is going to get regular again.

GIVEAWAY COMPETITION!

So, on the 20/5/13, it’ll be the one-year anniversary of RichReviewz, and while it’s still a goldfish to a lot of whales as far as online music journalism goes, I’m proud of it so far. So, in celebration, I’m doing a giveaway competition!

What are the prizes? Well, I’m giving you guys the chance to win three CDs: Slayer’s “God Hates Us All”, Trash Talk’s “Eyes & Nines” and Pig Destroyer’s “Book Burner”, as well as a Tangled Parrot t-shirt of your chosen size.

To win these, all you have to do is simply share this post on Facebook, easy as that. I’ll take names of people who have shared the page, then when the competition is over, I’ll put all the names in a hat and pick out a winner – then I’ll mail said person, ask you for your shirt size and address, and then send the prizes your way.

I have to warn that this is a UK ONLY competition. I can’t afford to pay for international p+p sorry, as much as I’d like to. Competition ends on 1/6/13!

So yeah, you’re in for a chance to win three awesome releases and a t-shirt for free. GO!

So, it’s almost been a year…

…since I started this blog and reviewing music in general. In sort of celebration, I’m thinking of either doing a competition (it would be UK only, sorry!) or letting people decide by popular choice on a release I’d have to review… which could anything. ANYTHING.

Hoping there’s enough interest in this so people can leave some feedback, otherwise it’ll just be like a birthday celebration by my lonesome. So lemme know, for dignity’s sake!

EDIT: At this time, I’m thinking of maybe doing a competition for three albums I really like/highly recommend of 2013, SO FAR.

My Record Store Day 2013.

So once again on the rise of Record Store Day, I had another blast looking, buying and talking at my favourite (and only, ha!) local record shop, Tangled Parrot (you can visit their online store here). This was my third one (’10, ’12 and this year) but it’s my first since collecting vinyl and so this time around, the special releases interested me a whole lot more than ever before (I’d only buy CDs and watch performances in the previous ones). So, here it is, my swag report… yeah…  Continue reading

Submission Review Ideas.

Due to the growing number of submissions and falling number of free time, I’m thinking of knocking out maybe five mini-reviews of submissions in a post from now on, so I’m wondering if that’s a good idea to any readers?

I must have a good fifteen submissions now that I’ve left piling up (my bad, I know) and due to more hours at work (which I really need) and other sites to write for, my free time for this is getting smaller.

Sorry to anybody who has sent me their music looking for those full in-depth reviews I’d do, but it’s looking unlikely I can do them, so mini-reviews seem like the best way. Something is better than nothing, right?
