My TEMPLES FESTIVAL 2014 Experience

This is the second (and final) attempt at reviewing the weekend because the original draft reached 1,250 words by the time I covered Electric Wizard – the headliner of the first night – and I know no-one loves music enough to read an essay. So here’s my run at a brief cover of the weekend, to make it less painful for you and me.  Continue reading

Yorkshire Riffer Live Review (Eiger Studios, Leeds. 26/4/14)

‘Kin Hell Fest is the brainchild of Paul from No Fucks Given, which is on next weekend, and caters mostly to fans of crust, grind, thrash, death and all other extreme types of metal with the likes of Napalm Death, Undersmile, Massacre, Jesus Cröst and more playing across the whole weekend. Yorkshire Riffer is a sort of little brother to this main event, acting as a warm-up gig (just like the Salvation gigs are to Damnation festival). Despite this being the smaller gig, that doesn’t mean the line-up was anything less than great with the likes of doomsters Eagle Twin, Palehorse and beer-loving grinders The Afternoon Gentlemen ripping the audience apart for the night.  Continue reading

Tim Hecker / Julianna Barwick Live Review (RNCM, Manchester. 1/4/14)

Many months ago, after hearing that Tim Hecker would be performing in Manchester, I knew in a snap moment that I had to go. There was no way I was going to miss it – alone or with other people – and for £14.50 it seemed like an absolute bargain, especially considering that it was to take place in the Royal Northern College of Music. A real venue for music. On the 1st of April, I spent my morning in work, had a quick nap and a frozen pizza, and then set off to the venue while itching with excitement…  Continue reading

Immortal Technique Live Review (The Globe, Cardiff. 18/6/13)

So, first of all, this is going to be more of a ‘report’ than an actual review. Why? Because I literally turned up to this gig without listening to any Immortal Technique albums, none but one song that I was familiar with and that it was my first pure live hip-hop experience (Death Grips felt a whole lot more like being in an Every Time I Die gig). If you’re asking “Why the hell did you turn up then?!”, my younger brother is a big Immortal Technique fan and while the opportunity was there, I thought what better way to take him to his first live performance than to see one of his favourite artists.

So while you’re reading this, remember: I was not an Immortal Technique fan walking into the venue. Continue reading

Feastem / Oblivionized Live Review (Le Pub, Newport. 13/6/13)

Wales is lucky to be graced with great gigs with most bands settling for Bristol as the most Western point of a UK tour; however (and luckily) this wasn’t the case for the Feastem/Oblivionized UK tour. Feastem, travelling all the way from Finland, and Oblivionized from London set Newport’s loveable Le Pub as their Welsh date and ended up being well worth the travel from South-West Wales, despite travelling/accommodation expenses being 12x the £5 door price! Continue reading

Dragged Into Sunlight Live Review/Interview

So I had the opportunity to catch Dragged Into Sunlight and Bossk on their UK tour in London, and interview T of DIS before the gig. Check out my review of the live performances and the interview – T had some very interesting things to say.

Melvins [Endless Residency] Live Review (The Exchange, Bristol. 21/5/13 & 22/5/13)

Melvins. What can you say about them… one of thee most important bands in rock music? Yes, and that is about all you can really say. When the Melvins announced that they’d be playing their Endless Residency themed nights in Bristol, I knew that there was no way I could possibly miss them. NO WAY. Continue reading

Bongripper Interview and Live Review!

So, in late April, I was given the awesome opportunity to go the Bristol date of the Bongripper/Conan/Humanfly UK tour, and to chat with the guys with Bongripper. It’s another highlight in this whole music reviewing thing so far, I still can’t comprehend it. Anyways, if you want to check some of the Bongripper/Conan/Humanfly stuff on the MetalRecusants site, click this way.

Death Grips Live Review (HMV Forum, London. 2/5/13)

If ATP couldn’t get enough of my respect already for putting on great events, they somehow squeezed some more out of me with this. Death Grips, anyone who follows this review blog should know, is a band who has done nothing wrong in my books and has been consistently blasted via my laptop, record player and iPod ever since “Exmilitary” came out. After unfortunately missing their previous shows/tours for various reasons, I made this particular gig in London a mission that could not be failed. Continue reading
