My Record Store Day 2013.

So once again on the rise of Record Store Day, I had another blast looking, buying and talking at my favourite (and only, ha!) local record shop, Tangled Parrot (you can visit their online store here). This was my third one (’10, ’12 and this year) but it’s my first since collecting vinyl and so this time around, the special releases interested me a whole lot more than ever before (I’d only buy CDs and watch performances in the previous ones). So, here it is, my swag report… yeah…  Continue reading

OBLIVIONIZED/PLAGUE WIDOW – “THIS BLACK EARTH” Split Review

Oblivionized/Plague Widow - This Black Earth

Oblivionized/Plague Widow – This Black Earth
Genre: Grindcore/Death Metal

Label: Malignant Manifestation Productions
/ Buried In Hell Records

In recent years, split releases seem to be gaining a rising popularity in underground metal/punk – a lot of the times offering some material that grows to be stapled as fan favourites. So, it is a great moment when London’s grinding Oblivionized and California’s furious Plague Widow release a split together named “This Black Earth” – exclusively released on 7-inch vinyl and cassette. A refreshing take on DIY in this digital age. But let’s talk about the music… Continue reading

R.I.P. Chi Cheng.

It’s no secret that I’m a big Deftones fan – have been since I was 16/17 – and to say I’m saddened by Chi’s passing is an understatement. Condolences go out to his hard-working family, friends and Deftones themselves. They all worked incredibly hard in keeping Chi as comfortable and safe as they possibly could during the years since that tragic accident that rocked everyone who knew him.

I remember reading/hearing about something Chi would often do in his community: he’d gather all his instruments, take them down to his local community and would teach people how to play music. It’s rare you’d ever find that real sort of kindness and goodwill in anyone who has managed to sell Platinum records.

We’re all going to miss you Chi, and you’ll forever live through the great music you played. One Love For Chi.

Hammerfest V!

So, last month, I went to my first Hammerfest festival up in North Wales at the Hafan y Môr Holiday Park. I went up there with the Eyesore Merch team to review the event and to carry out some interviews, and they’re all finally up!

HAMMERFEST V Review

WINTERFYLLETH Interview

SERPENT VENOM Interview

DYSCARNATE Interview

It was a pretty awesome experience and discovered some new bands that I just loved – could easily see myself going again.

Wavves – “AFRAID OF HEIGHTS” Review

Wavves - Afraid Of Heights

Wavves – Afraid Of Heights
Genre: Garage Rock/Noise Pop

Label: Mom + Pop Records

Nathan Williams, AKA Wavves, is musician who has faced his fair deal of controversy and criticism in his short but highly successful run so far. If you scour the internet, you’re bound to read or see the renowned performance at Primavera Sound ‘o9, but depending on the type of person you are, you’ll either see the humour in it or boil your blood. But one thing is for sure: Nathan Williams is a guy who writes fun music that melts the borders between pop, surf and garage rock – all with a noisy delivery. Continue reading
